The Abundant Life
June 8, 2013

When life comes to an end, we celebrate life with memorials and remember the spiritual connection of the recently deceased in funerals. We remember all that had been enjoyed in life during a sad time for those remaining. For some the loss can be so challenging that it can be forgotten that we are called to an abundant life.

John 10:10
The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly.

In death, we mourn the loss of the relationship and only have memories remaining. Grief can challenge faith, and it is our faith that gives us hope of the resurrection.

1 Corinthians 15:51-58
Behold, I shew you a mystery; We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed, In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump: for the trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed. For this corruptible must put on incorruption, and this mortal must put on immortality. So when this corruptible shall have put on incorruption, and this mortal shall have put on immortality, then shall be brought to pass the saying that is written, Death is swallowed up in victory. O death, where is thy sting? O grave, where is thy victory? The sting of death is sin; and the strength of sin is the law. But thanks be to God, which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. Therefore, my beloved brethren, be ye stedfast, unmoveable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, forasmuch as ye know that your labour is not in vain in the Lord.

While death marks the end of physical life, it also serves as the commencement for immortal life at the time of the resurrection. Until that time when we meet again, what can we do to honor the promise that we would be given an abundant life? We need to obey God and we need to remember the new commandment given to us by Jesus. We need to have love for one another, especially when they are alive and with us.

John 13:31-35
Therefore, when he was gone out, Jesus said, Now is the Son of man glorified, and God is glorified in him. If God be glorified in him, God shall also glorify him in himself, and shall straightway glorify him. Little children, yet a little while I am with you. Ye shall seek me: and as I said unto the Jews, Whither I go, ye cannot come; so now I say to you. A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another. By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another.

I guess the truth is nothing can take away the pain of loss. I believe in good times and bad as we connect to others and value them, we celebrate what is good, embrace what is good, and do what is good.
