Statement of Beliefs:
Obedience to God

We have started a discussion regarding a Statement of Beliefs for those who identify as First-Century Apostolic Christians, those of us who believe our practices are closely aligned to the practices of the first-century church. We began to look at how we believe that Christian faith includes a life of faith with works and that to live a live with one without the other is dead. Last week, we examined our belief that all who have died in Christ have eternal life through the resurrection of the dead. This week we will study the following belief:

We believe in the need for obedience to God.

Consider these verses:

1 John 2:3-6
And hereby we do know that we know him, if we keep his commandments. He that saith, I know him, and keepeth not his commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him. But whoso keepeth his word, in him verily is the love of God perfected: hereby know we that we are in him. He that saith he abideth in him ought himself also so to walk, even as he walked.

While it might appear that John was writing about obedience to God, in these verses John was showing the need to obey the commandments of Jesus. Obedience to God requires obedience to Jesus.

Matthew 22:36-40
Master, which is the great commandment in the law? Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.

When asked about the great commandment in the law, Jesus showed the ten commandments were designed to show love towards God and love towards fellow man.

James 2:8-13
If ye fulfil the royal law according to the scripture, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself, ye do well: But if ye have respect to persons, ye commit sin, and are convinced of the law as transgressors. For whosoever shall keep the whole law, and yet offend in one point, he is guilty of all. For he that said, Do not commit adultery, said also, Do not kill. Now if thou commit no adultery, yet if thou kill, thou art become a transgressor of the law. So speak ye, and so do, as they that shall be judged by the law of liberty. For he shall have judgment without mercy, that hath shewed no mercy; and mercy rejoiceth against judgment.

James showed in these verses that obedience was required and that it is through mercy we are able to rejoice against judgment when we first have mercy to others.

John 15:10
If ye keep my commandments, ye shall abide in my love; even as I have kept my Father's commandments, and abide in his love.

Jesus showed that as we keep his commandments we remain in his love just as Jesus remained in the love of the Father by keeping the Father's commandments.

1 John 5:2-3
By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God, and keep his commandments. For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments: and his commandments are not grievous.

While earlier verses in this first epistle of John show that obedience to God begins with obedience to Jesus, the process does end with obedience to God. By loving God and keeping God's commandments, we are able to love our fellow man.

Living a life of faith and works as a Christian requires us to believe in the need for obedience to God. There is much more to explore regarding this topic. A Statement of Beliefs is not intended to fully represent all of our beliefs, and is intended to provide a reasonable summary so that others can succinctly understand what we believe. It can also provide us with a reflective consideration of our own religious faith. The more we understand who we are and what we believe, the more we can help others understand who we are and what we believe, the more we will be able to celebrate what is good, embrace what is good, and do what is good.
